Exalted Ruler's Message

I just returned from the 144th National Elks convention in Anaheim. It was typical convention doings including luncheons, dinners, business meetings and the installation of the Grand Lodge officers for 2008-09. As I attend functions like this where the “higher ups” are in attendance, I am struck by the accessibility and genuineness of the leaders of our Order. I have always felt very at ease to speak to any Elk whether they are a brand new member on up to the Grand Exalter Ruler.
This reminds me of a conversation with a member of our Lodge when were discussing what attributes make up a good leader. We came up with the following:
         Don’t take yourself too seriously
         Listen more than you talk
         Be accessible
Follow through on what you say
The last attribute is the most difficult for me. Although I have the best intentions, my battle with procrastination, short term memory loss and overload of things to do presents a real challenge. Just ask Mary Borchers as to how timely I get my ER message to her. I am so blessed to have my fellow officers and committee chairman to help get the work of our Lodge done.
My thanks go out to Mike and Vicki Staples along with Russ Fortier for spearheading the Elks Fire Relief Dinner. A list of people who helped and donors of raffle prizes will be available in the next bulletin. Congratulations to Bill and Kathy Bateman for pulling off an outstanding July 4th event. At just shy of 200 people, it was reminiscent of some our picnics of the past. There was plenty of food, games and fun for everyone. Let’s make this an annual event and please plan to attend next year if you missed out.
August tends to be a little slower out here at #423. It is the perfect time to come out and enjoy a beverage while sitting outside on the patio. There are still a lot of events coming up in the next few months. I urge you to read your bulletin and make it a point to help support the Lodge. We will have a visit from our District Deputy John Knitter on Wednesday, September 24. It is always impressive to see many members at dinner during his visit. Even though it is over a month away, I would appreciate your attendance to help welcome him.

As always, thanks for reading and I will see you at the Lodge.

Terry Horne, Exalted Ruler
