November’s ER Message

Hello Brothers and Sisters. It’s been getting busier and busier around the Lodge and that’s great! October’s Birthday dinner was very nice with over 100 in attendance. Please keep making time for your Lodge and it’s activities.

Our new Lodge Manager, Amber, is up and running and doing a great job! It’s a lot of work and she welcomes it, so please, next time you see her say, THANK YOU! She is managing a lot of up coming events which is great for our Lodge. I’ve seen lodges that don’t have our facility and trust me, without Manzanita Place, we would be struggling! So please remember to be supportive of all our staff that keeps our doors open.

On the topic of other lodges, I have been to Yreka for our State President’s visitation. It was very nice to meet Wayne Howard and his wife, Coleen. Our first stop was to Mount Shasta Lodge for breakfast. The next stop was a US War Memorial that was very moving in Yreka. Welded statues and dedications to POW’s, the Korean War, Vietnam, WWI and WWII and the current conflicts in which we are engaged. If you are ever in the area, it’s a must see. We then went to Past State President, Doug Larsen’s home for a social. Then off to the Yreka Lodge for dinner and a message from our CHEA President.

The Lodge continues to see improvements from out front to the bar. If you haven’t seen the Elk out front, you must come by and be amazed at how impressive it is. Our Thursday night Queen of Hearts dinner is still providing funds to improve our bar area. Most recently, funds were used for the underside of the bar. The wood that PER Terry Horne so graciously donated for the top, side and overhang has been 2/3’s installed. The bar top and sides have been finished and they look great A big thanks to our own Rick, “The Fix-it Man”, Schmid and his volunteers came in on a weekend and had all the wood removed and the new wood installed. The busy helpers were Jan Bratcher, Norm Stump, Al Smith, Foz, Steve Bailey and Matt Goddard.

As we approach the holiday season, please remember all of the events we have coming up ~ just to name a few, we have Italian Night, Veterans Day activities, Elks’ Memorial Service, Thanksgiving, the Christmas Brunch followed by the Children’s Christmas Party, and New Year’s! Watch your Elkhorn Press for more details and dates.

Also, remember that membership is our life blood; this is the greatest Fraternity in the world, in my opinion. So when somebody asks you why you’re an Elk, ask them, “Why are you not an ELK?”

October’s ER Message

Hello again everybody. We are quickly approaching our busy season, which is good. Now that our summer break is over, meetings are back to regular schedule, the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Please make a point of attending as we are conducting the business of the Lodge, and with 900 plus members, we have roughly 20 to 30 of them making decisions. Please attend because they are not all initiation nights and I see that they go rather quickly.

There have also been some changes around the Lodge. Evan Billman has decided to take his talents into the wine industry and we wish him much success and hope to see him around the Lodge when he has time.

The bar improvements are continuing with new wood below and above the bar. A big thanks to Terry Horne for donating the wood and Rick Schmid, Al Smith, Bill Dixon, Kevin Ahlswede, Scott Bechhold, Jan Bratcher, Mike Efford and Don Schumacher for demo and installation of the new wood.

The long awaited Elk is here! The generous donation from an anonymous member of the amazing Elk statue is in its place and looks amazing! Rick Schmid, Duane Fosdick and Andy Wood have cleared, formed and placed the statue in front of the Lodge and if you haven’t seen it, please come down and have a look.

Football season is under way! So come on down to the Lodge and support your favorite team and support your Lodge. There is also Monday Night Dinners at the Lodge. Elks and their guests only at these events, so please call ahead if you plan on attending.

As we all know our Deputy District Grand Exalted Ruler is our very own Wade Thorpe (PER, Trustee, PVP.) With our new Grand Lodge rules not requiring us to perform an initiation for him, we will not. So please attend the meeting ton October 26th to get the background and message from our Grand Exalted Ruler, David R. Carr.

Lots of Activities at Our Lodge I have not been a member of this Lodge as long as many of you have, but in my time I’ve made some really great friends and been able to work with several of you. Jim Fowler, a friend and brother has recently passed. His dedication and leadership to this Lodge and the Order will forever be missed. My deepest condolences to the Fowler family.

September ER’s Message

We are well on our way to getting busy again around the Lodge with the fall rapidly approaching. Of course, with fall means football! Don’t forget you can come to the Lodge and watch your favorite teams play every Sunday.

I have returned from Grand Lodge and it was very interesting to watch Grand Lodge in session. There was a meeting every day in  which our now most recent Past Grand Exalted Ruler presided. After getting through all the final reports, we voted on 38 resolutions, which I talked about previously. There will be a vote in the Lodge during the first meeting in September on two amendments.

See your Bulletin for a brief description of the amendments we will be voting on. PLEASE ATTEND THE FIRST MEETING IN SEPTEMBER TO VOTE ON THESE AMENDMENTS.

I will have copies of the daily schedule of the Grand Lodge Proceedings at the Lodge if anybody would like to see what took place.

Please make time to come for dinner at the Lodge; review the menu and support your Lodge. Remember to ask your friends who are not members to dinner and show them what WE are about!

Bowling News

The Chico Elks bowling started the new season on August 28th. There is a need for 3 bowlers to fill the eight teams. If possible, it would be great to fill the other two teams making a 10 team league.

As everyone knows most of the prize fund goes to the Elks Major Project. The league last season gave $1,700 to this. The League bowls for 31 weeks and the cost to bowl is $15 per week. Call Ernie Ridley, 342-5438, if you would like to join us. The Northern Elks Travel League started its new season on August 21st in Yuba City.

The league is short one team; if anyone would like to bowl, we can use 4 people, men or women. Men have to be a paid up Elks member from any Lodge in the North State.

The League bowls once a month for 8 months, and the cost to bowl is $14 per month per person. The month of September, the League bowls at Tyme to Bowl Lanes in Oroville, Gold Country Casino; start time, 1 PM.

May’s ER Message

It’s starting to feel a little bit like summer; ok, maybe the groundhog saw his shadow but I’m ready for some sun! We, as an Order and a Lodge, do amazing things for each other and our communities. I would like to take a few moments to recognize some of the great things that our members have recently done.

I would like to thank Donna Ramey, Claudia Jenkins, Shirley Hanning, Gus Borchus and Joe Lusher for their hard work on the Stein Cabinet. I’m sure many have seen the amazing job they did! The new lights really accent our amazing steins that have been collected over the years. I’ve heard the stories of the Stein Club that used to travel the state. Lodge members would travel to different lodges and bring steins to drink from. When the evening would end they would leave steins for that lodge. Our collection used to be significantly larger but over the years and having outside parties, it has diminished. I’m proud to say that we still have an amazing collection and thanks to Donna and her crew, it is displayed appropriately.

I would also like to recognize all the hard work put into our 10th Annual Dispatchers of the Year! This is an Elk event that is  unique and amazing, if you haven’t attended, please do so in the future. The dispatchers from each division of public safety select a dispatcher of the year from their department. Remember these are the people you speak to when you call 911 for assistance, not the fireman, police or ambulance drivers. This is the first line of the rescue process. Without their presence of mind and ability to see through every situation, the rescue personnel you see at your house may not arrive in time or ready to handle your specific need. This is the time to pay tribute to the unsung heroes of our emergency response units. The committee also gets fire, police, rescue and specialized equipment vehicles to the Lodge for an exhibition that is enjoyed by the public and by the children from our schools.

It is also time again for NASCAR! Come enjoy the races with our large flat screens! As always there is NASCAR bingo and other raffles that benefit our charities. Pay attention to the Elkhorn Press for bring your own meat BBQ for NASCAR! Members and officers will cook your selected meats to your choosing and there is always sides available from our kitchen.

Remember the dinners we have Tuesday through Thursday; our kitchen puts together some amazing dishes! The cost of our dinners is not comparable to any other restaurant in town! Tuesday,$7, Wednesday, $9 (except birthday dinner, which is $12,) and Queen of Hearts, $9. Our dinners come with a salad and dessert! Please find time to come enjoy dinner with us.

We have one of the nicer Lodges around, and we also have the hardest working volunteers around! From the grounds to renovations and maintenance in the building, to events that are put on at our lodge, they help out. We have close to 200 American Flags that are put up and taken down throughout the year at our Lodge by volunteers. With that being said, if you have a special talent or just want to help out please do so! Feel free to drop a note at the office expressing your want to help out in a certain area. If you are uncertain, review the committees printed in this newsletter. I hope to see you at our lodge very soon!
