The Chico Elks Lodge 423 will be hosting the Chico Veteran’s Day Committee’s annual
Veteran’s Day Ceremony
which is open to the public and will be held at 1705 Manzanita Avenue in Chico on Saturday November 11, 2017 starting at 10:30am.
After the ceremony a lunch will be served, at no charge, of Hot Dogs, beans and refreshments.
There will be various Veteran’s groups and displays on exhibit. Honor Coins will be on display and are offered at a suggested donation of $10 per coin.
At 1:00pm Boy Scout Troop 423 will hold a Flag Retirement ceremony and should you have any tattered or soiled US flags you would like to be honorably retired, please present them to the scouts on site. Each flag is honorably treated and retired as prescribed by U.S. flag etiquette.
The annual Elks Americanism Essay Contest is a program of the Elks’ Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee, this contest is for students in 5th through 8th grades and is designed to promote interest and reflection on freedom and liberty.
The theme of this year’s essay is:
“Why Our Veterans Are America’s Heroes?”
Eligible participants must be Students enrolled in the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grade at the time of the contest.
- Essay length is not to exceed 300 words.
- Essay must be typed or legibly printed in ink. Also, Essay must be submitted as written (or typed) by the entrant.
- Essay must be submitted for judging to the Elks Lodge nearest to the address of the entrant. (Schools in the school districts of Chico, Durham, Biggs, Gridley, Hamilton City and Oroville are in the area)
Student participants must be identified by name, grade, school attending and sponsoring Elks Lodge (Chico Elks Lodge #423) on the Essay.
- Essay should be submitted to Chico Elks Lodge #423 on or before December 15, 2017.
Plaques awarded by the Grand Lodge for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place for national winning essays in Division I and Division II. Winners will be announced at the Grand Lodge Session in San Antonio, Texas, July 1-4, 2018.

The Chico Elks Lodge 423 has donated $2300 to help build benches at Chico’s Chapman Elementary School. The benches were a vision of Chapman Elementary intern and Chico Elks Lodge 423 staff member Erin Carioti and were built by the community youth group YouthBuild.
Joe Koshak will be driving his Big Red BPOE 423 licensed truck with all the kids. Steve Laird has arranged to borrow Paradise Elks Lodge 2026’s large American flag for us to carry in the Parade. Our Exalted Ruler Jen White will be driven by Roger Hart in his car.
The Elks Ladies will also be walking along behind the Elks. Please bring the whole family and come down and show your support for the Lodge and Our community! Please wear a lodge shirt if you have one.
